**Short answer:** To set up serial-numbered products in Unleashed, go to Settings > Company > Configuration, turn on Serialized Products and click Save. Then open each product, toggle Serialized in the Type section of the Details tab and save. If the product has stock, enter a serial number for each unit in the pop-up. Serial numbers are added when you receipt purchase orders. This needs Core or Pro, and the account setting can't be turned off.

## Before you start

- Serialized Products aren't supported on Lite. You need Core or Pro.
- Once you turn on Serialized Products for the account, it can't be turned off. It doesn't force serials on every product; you choose which products are serialized.
- A product can't be serialized if it's batch-tracked, a Never Diminishing Product, on an open transaction (purchase orders, sales orders, quotes, shipments) or on a Bill of Materials.
- Serialized products must have whole-number quantities.
- Have one serial number ready for every unit you already hold.

## Step 1: Turn on Serialized Products

1. Go to Settings > Company > Configuration.
2. Find the Serialized Products tile and toggle it on.
3. Click Save in the top right corner.

## Step 2: Make a product serialized

1. Open the product record and check its References tab for open transactions. Complete them, delete them or remove the product.
2. In the Details tab, under Type, check Batch Tracked is off.
3. Toggle Serialized on and click Save.
4. If the product has stock, the "Serialized - Stock On Hand" window opens. Enter one serial number per unit, separated by commas or new lines, and click Add Serial.
5. Check the list, delete any mistakes with the bin icon, and click Save once every unit has a serial number.
6. A Serial Numbers tab now appears on the product record.
7. For many products, use the Serial Numbers tab under Inventory > Products > Import/Export. List each unit's serial on its own row, with the product code, warehouse, total stock and cost only on the first row.

## Step 3: Use serials on transactions

1. Purchase orders: serial numbers can only be added when you receipt the purchase order.
2. Sales orders and shipments: allocate serials on the sales order and they carry to the shipment, or leave them and assign them on the shipment.
3. Credit notes: returned serials must match those shipped on the sales order. With a Free Credit, you can enter any serial that doesn't already exist in Unleashed.
4. Supplier returns: choose the serials you're sending back, from those bought on that purchase.
5. Warehouse transfers, stock adjustments, stock counts and assemblies each let you pick serials too.
6. To look up where a serial went, use the Serial Number Enquiry. No other report shows serial numbers.

## If something doesn't look right

- The Serialized toggle won't save: the product is on an open transaction, on a Bill of Materials, or is batch-tracked.
- You can't turn serial tracking off for a product: it still has stock on hand.
- Serials ended up on the wrong line: when a serialized product appears on several lines of one order, Unleashed groups the serials on the first line. Keep one line per product.
- Large shipments are slow: Unleashed suggests no more than 200 lines of serialized products per shipment.
- Serial numbers are missing from an API response: the request must ask for serial number data.

## Where Unleashed leaves the work to you

- Capturing every serial number at receipt, often by scanning one unit at a time.
- Picking the right serials for each shipment and each return.
- Answering "which customer has this unit?" from the Serial Number Enquiry, since other reports don't show serials.

## Where Logistify fits

Logistify doesn't set serial numbers on orders. The [Sales Order Service](https://logistify.ai/agents/sales-order/) enters customer orders into Unleashed as sales orders, and your team assigns serials on the sales order or shipment. For products tracked in lots, see [How to set up batch tracking and expiry dates](https://logistify.ai/guides/unleashed/batch-tracking-expiry-dates/).
