**Short answer:** To set up multiple units of measure in Unleashed, create the units under Settings > System Settings > Units of Measure. On each product's Details tab, use Units of Measure > Add New to set the base unit, then add alternate units with a Conversion Rate and tick Purchasing. Alternate units are for purchasing only: stock, sales orders, assemblies and adjustments stay in the base unit. The base unit locks once the product is used on a transaction.

## Before you start

- Pick the base unit carefully. It's how stock is counted everywhere, and Unleashed recommends your smallest unit (bottle, gram, each).
- The base unit can't be changed once the product has been used on a transaction.
- Unit names can't be edited once created, so settle on a naming convention first.
- Alternate units are only for purchasing. They aren't available on Sales Orders, Assemblies or Stock Adjustments.

## Step 1: Create your units

1. Go to Settings > System Settings > Units of Measure.
2. Enter a unique Unit of Measure Name, such as Bottle, Case or Pallet.
3. Click Add. Repeat for each unit.

## Step 2: Set the base unit on a product

1. Open the product record and go to the Details tab.
2. Scroll to Units of Measure and click Add New.
3. In the "Add Base Unit of Measure" window, select the base unit. The first unit added becomes the base unit with a conversion rate of 1.
4. Optionally enter Pack Size, Barcode, Weight, Width, Height and Depth. Unleashed uses the base unit's dimensions for order weight and volume, and its barcode for scanning.
5. Click Add.

## Step 3: Add alternate purchasing units

1. In the same Units of Measure section, click Add New.
2. In the "Add Unit of Measure" window, select the unit, for example Case.
3. Enter the Conversion Rate: 24 if one Case holds 24 Bottles.
4. Tick Purchasing so the unit is available on purchase orders, then click Add.
5. In the product's Purchase tab, set each supplier's default purchasing unit on the Suppliers tab, and any unit-based prices on the Quantity Prices tab.
6. To add alternate units for many products, use the Alternate Units of Measure tab under Inventory > Products > Import/Export. The products and units must already exist.

## Step 4: Buy in the alternate unit

1. On a new purchase order, add the product. Its default purchasing unit fills the Purchasing Unit field; change it if you're buying in another unit.
2. Enter the quantity in that unit.
3. When you receipt, Unleashed converts to the base unit. One Case at a conversion rate of 24 adds 24 Bottles to stock.
4. Serial-numbered and batch-tracked products are always receipted in the base unit, so 1 carton of 100 tubes needs batch details for 100 tubes.

## If something doesn't look right

- You can't change the base unit: the product is on a purchase order (even a deleted one) or another transaction, or the base unit is set as a default purchasing unit somewhere. The first can't be undone; the second can.
- A purchase order from the Reorder Report shows 62.0833 cases: the report works in base units and doesn't round to whole purchasing units. Edit the quantity before placing the order, or set pack sizes so it rounds.
- Purchase order totals differ slightly from stock value: base-unit prices are rounded to 4 decimal places, which shows on large quantities at small unit prices.
- A dimension won't save: leave it empty rather than entering zero.
- You can't obsolete or delete a unit: it's still a base unit or a default purchasing unit on a product or supplier.

## Where Unleashed leaves the work to you

- Customers who order by the case: sales orders use the base unit, so someone converts cases to units on each order.
- Merging old pack-size products (WATER, WATER6P, WATER24P) into one: Unleashed's suggested route is Stock Adjustments to move the stock, then marking the old products obsolete.
- Fixing a wrong base unit after transactions: you create a new product and move stock and activity to it.

## Where Logistify fits

Logistify doesn't set units of measure on orders or change your product setup. The [Sales Order Service](https://logistify.ai/agents/sales-order/) enters customer orders into Unleashed as sales orders, and a person reviews exceptions as held orders. To turn supplier spreadsheets into clean SKUs first, see [Product Catalog Cleanup](https://logistify.ai/agents/product-catalog/) and [How to import products in bulk](https://logistify.ai/guides/unleashed/import-products-csv/).

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Can I sell in cases and stock in units in Unleashed?

Not with alternate units. Unleashed's alternate units are for purchasing only; sales orders default to the base unit.

### What should my base unit be?

Your smallest unit, Unleashed recommends. If you use grams in assemblies but buy in kilograms, the base unit is grams and the conversion rate for kilograms is 1000.

### Can I change a product's base unit later?

Only before the product is used on a transaction. After that you'd create a new product with the right base unit.

### How does the conversion rate work?

One alternate unit equals the base unit times the conversion rate. One case of 24 bottles has a rate of 24.

### Can I import units of measure?

Yes. Use the Alternate Units of Measure template under Inventory > Products > Import/Export, with base units already set on the products.
