Short answer

To set up dimensions in Intuit Enterprise Suite, go to Settings ⚙ > Dimensions, select Create Dimension, and add values, nesting sub-values up to five levels. A parent company can share each dimension with chosen entities. Tag transaction lines in the dimension column, then report by dimension in Modern View reports. Intuit's class-tracking article covers classes for QuickBooks Online Plus and Advanced and dimensions for IES, but doesn't explain moving classes or locations into dimensions.

Before you start

  • You're on Intuit Enterprise Suite. Intuit says dimensions are turned on automatically.
  • You're signed in as an Admin or a Standard-All user. Only these users can create dimensions.
  • To share dimensions across several companies, work from the parent company.
  • You know which segments you want to report on, such as departments or product lines.
  • Intuit's help article mentions usage limits without giving a number. Inactive dimensions don't count toward them.

Locations are not covered in either article. Intuit's custom roles article for QuickBooks Online Advanced and Intuit Enterprise Suite treats locations as a separate setting you turn on, for example to limit a sales role to certain locations. Intuit's Fall 2026 release notes (26 October 2026) describe dimensions as the tags that organize reporting by location, department, project or business line. Neither help article explains how existing classes or locations become dimensions.

Step 1: Create a dimension for a single company

  1. 1Go to Settings ⚙ and select Dimensions.
  2. 2Select Create Dimension and enter a name.
  3. 3Optional: add a sub-value. For the first level, add the name. For more levels, select sub-value of and choose the dimension it belongs under. Intuit says you can nest up to five dimensions.
  4. 4Select Save.
  5. 5To create another dimension, select the back arrow to return to the dimensions hub and repeat these steps.

Step 2: Share a dimension across companies

  1. 1From your parent company, go to Settings ⚙ and select Dimensions.
  2. 2Select Create dimension and enter a name. By default, the dimension is shared with all the companies you have access to.
  3. 3In the Select companies to share dropdown ▼, choose one or more companies, or choose Select all.
  4. 4Select Save.
  5. 5Optional: on the new dimension page, select Add value, enter a name for the value and select Save.
  6. 6Optional: on a value's row, select Add value and name the sub-value. Check Sub-value of, choose the parent value in the dropdown and select Save.

Step 3: Edit, deactivate or move dimension values

  1. 1Go to Settings ⚙ and select Dimensions, then select a dimension card.
  2. 2Select More actions ▼ to Edit share settings, Rename dimension or Make inactive.
  3. 3To edit a value or sub-value, select its down arrow ▼, then Edit. Make your changes and select Save.
  4. 4To retire a value, select its dropdown arrow ▼, then Make inactive (reduces usage). To bring it back, find it on the dimension card and select Make active.
  5. 5To move a child value under a different parent, select its dropdown arrow ▼, then Edit. Keep Sub-value of checked, choose the new parent value and select Save.

Step 4: Tag transaction lines with dimensions

  1. 1Select + New, then the type of transaction you want to record.
  2. 2Fill out the transaction as you normally would.
  3. 3Add the dimension values in the dimension column on each line.
  4. 4Optional: hover over a dimension and select Apply to all, which applies the value to every line and overwrites values already there, or Apply to empty, which fills only lines that have no value yet.
  5. 5Save or send the transaction.

Tagging is per line. Intuit's Fall 2026 release notes announce header-level dimensions on sales orders, set once and carried onto downstream forms such as invoices, but no help article gives steps for them yet. To have IES suggest dimension values for products, services and fixed assets, see How to assign default dimensions automatically with Dimension Assignment.

Step 5: Run reports by dimension

  1. 1Go to Reports, then Standard reports.
  2. 2In Business overview, open the Profit and Loss report.
  3. 3Select Display columns by and choose a dimension. The report shows totals for each value and grand totals.
  4. 4Or select Customize, then Filter, choose the dimension type and select one or more values. This groups income, expenses and net income by those values.
  5. 5For other reports, such as Sales by Customer Type Detail, select Customize, then Columns. Search for and select Transaction, select Line Items, find Dimensions and choose the dimension.

Dimensions only appear on reports that open in Modern View. If you share dimensions across entities, see How to eliminate intercompany balances and view consolidated financial statements for the group-level reports.

If something doesn't look right

  • A dimension doesn't show on a report: dimensions are only available on reports that open in Modern View.
  • Apply to all replaced values you'd already entered: it overwrites other lines. Use Apply to empty to fill only blank lines.
  • You can't create a dimension: only Admins and Standard-All users can.
  • You're close to your usage limit: make dimensions you no longer need inactive. Inactive dimensions don't count toward it.
  • A value sits under the wrong parent: edit it, keep Sub-value of checked and choose the right parent value.

Where Intuit Enterprise Suite leaves the work to you

  • Intuit's dimensions and class-tracking articles don't explain how to move existing classes or locations into dimensions. Its article on moving a QuickBooks Desktop file to IES doesn't list what data moves either, so plan the mapping with Intuit.
  • Tagging is line by line. Apply to all and Apply to empty save clicks, but someone still picks the value on each transaction.
  • Header-level dimensions on sales orders are announced in the Fall 2026 release notes, with no help article yet.
  • Intuit's help article mentions usage limits without a number, and says inactive dimensions don't count toward them. Confirm what your contract includes.

How Logistify helps

Logistify doesn't create, share or assign dimensions; that setup stays in Intuit Enterprise Suite. Its Sales Order Service enters customer orders that arrive by email, PDF, Excel, EDI and other channels into IES as sales orders, and a person reviews exceptions. For what happens after an order is in, see How to create a sales order and turn it into an invoice.
