Intuit's QuickBooks Desktop help articles, updated August to October 2026

Short answer

Intuit's help articles list no QuickBooks Desktop 2025 or 2026; the current versions are Desktop 2024 and Enterprise 24.0. Intuit calls them its final annual platform releases, so new features now arrive as release updates. Press F2 to see your release, and go to Help > Update QuickBooks Desktop to install the latest one. As of October 20, 2026, Intuit's update article listed QuickBooks 2024 R21_65 for Windows.

This guide covers which version is current and how to stay on it. For the date each older version lost support, see QuickBooks Desktop support end dates.

Before you start

  • Know which product you run: Pro Plus, Premier Plus, Mac Plus or Enterprise. Intuit numbers Enterprise versions by year, such as 24.0 for 2024.
  • Sign in as the admin before an upgrade. Intuit's company file update steps need the admin user.
  • Back up the company file before you move to a new version year. Intuit's upgrade article asks for this first.
  • If several computers share the file, keep them on the same version and release. Intuit says a computer on an older version can't open the file once it's updated.

Which version is current

QuickBooks Desktop 2024 and QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise 24.0 are the current versions. Intuit's release process article calls them its final annual platform releases. Instead of a new version each year, subscribers now receive features and fixes as updates to 2024 and 24.0.

From Intuit's update, release process and release notes articles, checked October 20, 2026. Release numbers change as Intuit ships updates, so check Intuit's update article for the newest one.

Intuit's what's new article says Pro Plus, Premier Plus and Enterprise 2024 won't be discontinued in May 2027 and have no sunset deadline. It asks you to accept the periodic in-product updates when QuickBooks offers them.

Why there's no 2025 or 2026 version

Intuit used to ship a new Desktop version each year, and it has moved away from that cycle. Updates now come as numbered releases of 2024 and 24.0, such as R19, R20 and R21. A release can add features, not just fixes. Recent ones, from Intuit's release notes and what's new article:

  • R21 (June 9, 2026): search within account descriptions, and right-click to duplicate accounts, customers, vendors and jobs.
  • R20 (April 23, 2026): payroll changes for the new 2026 W-2 rules on tipped occupations.
  • R19 (March 10, 2026): purchase order numbers on customer statements, and profit shown for each invoice line.
  • R16 (September 9, 2025): an Invoice Profitability report, which Intuit marks Enterprise only.
  • R15 (May 20, 2025): alternate vendors and Enhanced Inventory Receiving, both in Enterprise.

If you see a QuickBooks Desktop 2025 or 2026 offered for sale, check it against Intuit's own articles first. They describe no such product.

Step 1: Check your version and release

  1. 1Open QuickBooks Desktop and your company file.
  2. 2Press F2, or Ctrl+1, to open the Product Information window. On a Mac, press Command+1.
  3. 3Read your version and release number, such as 2024 R21.
  4. 4Compare it with the latest release on Intuit's update article. On October 20, 2026, that article listed QuickBooks 2024 R21_65 for Windows and R13 for Mac Plus 2024.

Step 2: Install the latest release

  1. 1Go to Help > Update QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. 2Open the Update Now tab and select Get Updates.
  3. 3When the download finishes, restart QuickBooks. Select Install Now when it asks.
  4. 4To get future releases on their own, go back to Help > Update QuickBooks Desktop, open the Options tab, select Yes, then Close.

If the update won't run inside QuickBooks, close it and go to Intuit's Downloads & Updates page. Choose the standard setup, then your country, product and version. Select Search, then Get the latest updates. Open the file and restart your computer. Our guide to updating QuickBooks Desktop covers more of the problems.

On a Mac

Go to the QuickBooks menu, select Check for QuickBooks Updates, then Install and Relaunch. If the release number doesn't change, download the update from the Downloads & Updates page instead.

Step 3: Move up from 2023 or older

A release update keeps you current within 2024. It doesn't move you from 2023 to 2024, because that is an upgrade to a new version year. Intuit says upgrades are included in your subscription at no extra cost. It discontinued version 2023 (23.0) as of May 31, 2026.

  1. 1Back up the company file: File > Back up Company > Create Local Backup.
  2. 2Open QuickBooks and select Upgrade Now when the prompt appears. Or select Discovery Hub next to your profile icon, then Upgrade to QuickBooks 2024, Proceed to upgrade and Upgrade Now.
  3. 3To keep the old version installed, select Keep old version on my computer. Then select Let's go.
  4. 4Wait for the download, install and activation to finish, then select Open QuickBooks.
  5. 5Make sure all users are signed out. Open the company file, sign in as the admin and select Update Now. QuickBooks backs up the file before it updates it.
  6. 6After the update to 2024 or 24.0, set a temporary password for each non-admin user. Each person sets a permanent one at their next sign-in.

No upgrade prompt? Go to Edit > Preferences > General > My Preferences, select Bring back all one time messages, then reopen QuickBooks. On a Mac, go to Help > Upgrade QuickBooks, then Upgrade for Free and Let's go.

Who can still buy QuickBooks Desktop

Intuit's stop-sell article sets the rules for US buyers. After September 30, 2024, Intuit stopped selling new subscriptions of Pro Plus, Premier Plus, Mac Plus and Desktop Enhanced Payroll.

  • New US customers: only QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise. Intuit lists Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond.
  • Existing Pro Plus, Premier Plus and Mac Plus subscribers: you can keep renewing. Intuit says you still get security updates, product updates and support.
  • Existing Desktop Payroll subscribers: you can keep renewing too.
  • Enterprise customers, new or existing: you can buy or renew by phone or online.
  • Outside the US: the stop-sell decision applies to the US only.

Intuit also warns about fake software. It says Desktop Plus, Pro, Premier and Mac products offered for sale online are not authorized by Intuit. It no longer sells lifetime or perpetual licenses of Pro, Premier or Mac. For Enterprise costs, see QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise pricing explained.

Common problems

  • The release number doesn't change after an update. Intuit's fix is to download the update again, then use the Downloads & Updates page if that fails.
  • Intuit's pages can show different newest releases. On October 20, 2026, the update article listed R21_65, while the release notes ended at R21_52. Go by the update article.
  • QuickBooks 2024 won't install. It needs 64-bit Windows. Intuit lists Windows 11 and Windows Server 2016, 2019 and 2022 as supported, and doesn't support ARM processors.
  • The upgrade prompt never appears. Bring back one-time messages in My Preferences, as in Step 3.

If QuickBooks shows a subscription error instead, see what happens when a QuickBooks Desktop subscription ends.

Where QuickBooks Desktop leaves the work to you

  • Release updates reach a computer only when someone accepts them or turns on automatic updates there.
  • Every computer that opens a shared file has to be on the same version and release.
  • Moving from 2023 to 2024 is a separate upgrade, plus a company file update and new temporary passwords for non-admin users.
  • Someone has to check that a seller really is Intuit before buying a Desktop license.
