Is There an MCP Server for QuickBooks Desktop?
- Applies to
- QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise, Premier and Pro
- Steps checked against
- Intuit's developer documentation and GitHub, CData's MCP Server documentation, and Anthropic and OpenAI help articles, checked October 2026
Short answer
Not from Intuit. Intuit's official MCP server works only with QuickBooks Online. For QuickBooks Desktop, MCP servers come from third parties and work in one of two ways. A local server runs on the computer with QuickBooks and reads the company file through Intuit's SDK. A hosted server from a QuickBooks Desktop API vendor reaches the file through the QuickBooks Web Connector. Either way, QuickBooks and the connector have to be running on that computer.
Why Intuit's MCP server doesn't reach Desktop
MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is an open protocol that lets AI assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT call tools and read data. Intuit publishes an MCP server on GitHub, but it signs in to a QuickBooks Online company through Intuit's cloud API. A QuickBooks Desktop company file isn't in Intuit's cloud. Apps reach it on the computer that holds it, through Intuit's SDK and qbXML, or through the QuickBooks Web Connector, which ships with QuickBooks Desktop. Our QuickBooks Web Connector guide explains how that works.
The MCP options for QuickBooks Desktop
A local MCP server on the QuickBooks computer
The server runs on the same computer as QuickBooks and opens the company file through Intuit's SDK, the way any QuickBooks integration does. CData documents an MCP Server for QuickBooks that runs locally against a company file, or reaches one on another machine through its QuickBooks Desktop Gateway. Developers have also published community servers on GitHub. Claude Desktop and Claude Code can use local MCP servers. ChatGPT connects only to remote MCP servers, so a local one needs a secure tunnel.
A hosted MCP server from a QuickBooks Desktop API vendor
Some vendors that sell API access to QuickBooks Desktop also host an MCP server. Your AI assistant calls the vendor's cloud, and the vendor's service exchanges requests with your company file through the Web Connector. Nothing runs on your computer beyond the Web Connector, but your QuickBooks data passes through the vendor's systems, and requests wait for the Web Connector to be running.
Build your own
A developer can wrap qbXML requests as MCP tools, with the SDK on the QuickBooks computer or the Web Connector in front of a web service. You control exactly which tools exist, and you also own the error handling, the permissions and the upkeep.
| Option | Where it runs | Works with | What you maintain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local MCP server | The computer with QuickBooks | Claude Desktop and Claude Code; ChatGPT through a secure tunnel | The server and the QuickBooks computer |
| Hosted MCP server from an API vendor | The vendor's cloud, plus the Web Connector on your computer | AI clients that accept a remote MCP server; check how it signs in | The vendor account and the Web Connector |
| Your own build | Wherever your developer runs it | Whatever clients your developer supports | All of it |
| Intuit's official MCP server | Your machine, signed in to QuickBooks Online | QuickBooks Online only | Not an option for Desktop |
Before you connect one
- Start read-only. A tool that can create records acts on your live company file.
- Give the server its own QuickBooks user with only the permissions it needs, so you can see and limit what it does.
- Test on a copy of the company file before you point it at the real one.
- Know where your data goes. A local server keeps it on your computer until the assistant reads it. A hosted server sends it through the vendor's cloud.
- Check your company's rules on AI tools and financial data, and which AI plans IT has approved.

When you don't need an MCP server at all
An MCP server gives an assistant tools. Someone still has to ask it the right questions, check its work, and fix what goes wrong. If the goal is a recurring job, a managed service may fit better. Logistify is built for manufacturers and distributors on QuickBooks Desktop, including Enterprise. It connects through the Web Connector, enters customer orders as sales orders, records customer payments against open invoices, and follows up with suppliers on open purchase orders.
