Short answer

To create a bill of materials in Unleashed, turn on "Assembled Product" in the finished product's Details tab and "Component Product" on each part. Then go to Production > Assemblies > Add Bill of Materials, select the assembled product, and add each component with the Quantity needed for one unit plus any Wastage Qty. Each assembled product can have only one BOM. Production is free on Unleashed Pro and an optional module on Core.

Before you start

  • Assemblies and bills of materials are part of Unleashed's Production & Manufacturing module. Unleashed's pricing pages list it as free on Unleashed Pro and an optional module on Unleashed Core: £49 a month in the UK, A$69 in Australia, NZ$69 in New Zealand and US$69 in the US, excluding applicable taxes (checked 23 October 2026).
  • In the finished product's record, open the Details tab and, under Type, turn on "Assembled Product". A BOM can only be created for an assembled product.
  • In each part's record, turn on "Component Product" under Type. Only component products can be added to a BOM.
  • Your user role needs the Bill of Materials Details, View Bill of Materials and Import Bill of Materials permissions.
  • Each assembled product can have one BOM, including obsolete ones. For bespoke or varying builds, Unleashed suggests an Assembly without a BOM, or a generic BOM that you trim on each Assembly.
  • Overheads such as factory rent, utilities or staff wages can go on a BOM as Never Diminishing Products. Our assembly costs guide covers that.

For overheads and outside charges, see How to add labor and other costs to an assembly. To create products in bulk first, see How to import products in bulk.

Step 1: Create the BOM

  1. 1From the main menu, go to Production > Assemblies > Add Bill of Materials.
  2. 2Use the Product Code and Product Description fields to select the assembled product.
  3. 3Unleashed creates the BOM with an auto-generated BOM Number.
  4. 4You can also start a BOM from the product's record (Details tab, under Type, click "Assembled Product"), from an existing Assembly (the blue plus icon next to the Bill of Materials field), or by opening another BOM and selecting Clone.

Step 2: Add the component products

  1. 1Open the BOM.
  2. 2Search for and select the part in the Component Product field.
  3. 3In Quantity, enter how many units of the component are needed to build one unit of the assembled product.
  4. 4If some of the component is lost in production, enter the units wasted per assembled unit in Wastage Qty.
  5. 5Click Add. Repeat for each component.
  6. 6To change a line later, click its Quantity or Wastage Qty in the grid. Use the bin icon to remove a component.

Each line's Unit Cost comes from the component's Average Landed Cost (ALC), or its Last Cost when it has no stock on hand. The line's Total Cost is Unit Cost x (Quantity + Wastage). The Total Cost under the grid is what one assembled unit would cost at today's component costs. It does not change the assembled product's ALC, default sell price or default purchase price. For how ALC moves, see How average landed cost is calculated.

Step 3: Set the BOM details

  • Can Auto Assemble: turn on for products you make to order. When the product is allocated to a Sales Order without enough stock, Unleashed creates an Assembly for the shortfall.
  • Auto Assign Oldest Batch/Serial: assigns the oldest available batch or serial numbers from the components' stock.
  • Can Auto Disassemble: breaks the product into its components when it is receipted on a Purchase Order.
  • Sort By Product Code: lists components by product code on the BOM and on its Assemblies. Otherwise, drag components into order with the 6-dot icon.
  • Duration Type (Unit or Assembly), Expected Duration, Production Hours Per Day and Production Days: used to plan how long production takes. The read-only Average Duration shows the average of the last 50 assemblies.
  • Comments: copied into manually created Assemblies and Disassemblies, but not into Auto Assemblies.

Step 4: Add by-products (optional)

  1. 1Open the BOM and select the By-Products tab.
  2. 2Select the product created as a side result of production in the By-Product field.
  3. 3Enter how many units are made per assembled unit in Quantity.
  4. 4In Cost Percentage, enter the share of the assembled product's Total Cost that goes to the by-product.
  5. 5Click Add. Never Diminishing products can't be by-products.

Step 5: Build multi-level BOMs

  • When a component has its own BOM, it becomes a sub-BOM. Click the > icon next to it in the parent BOM to see its components.
  • Use Expand All and Collapse All to show or hide every sub-BOM layer.
  • Sub-BOMs can't be edited from the parent BOM. Open the sub-BOM itself.
  • Use Print > Print BOM Tree for a PDF showing every layer, or Print BOM for a single level. The PDF template can't be customized.
  • In Production > Bill of Materials > View Bill of Materials, tick Display Associated top-level BOM(s) to find the parent BOMs a product is used in.

Step 6: Import BOMs in bulk from a CSV

  1. 1Go to Production > Import/Export and select the Bill of Materials tab.
  2. 2Select "Download Bill of Materials template file".
  3. 3On the first row for each BOM, enter the Assembled Product Code, Component Product Code and Quantity.
  4. 4For each further component, add a row with the Component Product Code and Quantity. Quantities and Wastage Quantity take up to 4 decimal places.
  5. 5Fill in optional columns such as Can Auto Assemble (YES or NO), Duration Type and Comments.
  6. 6Save the file as CSV, return to the Bill of Materials tab and upload it in the upload tile.
  7. 7Watch the task manager icon in the banner: an orange circle means in progress, a green tick means it worked, a red cross means it failed.
  8. 8To update existing BOMs, use Export > Bill of Materials, change the rows, and import the file again the same way.

If something doesn't look right

  • The product isn't offered when creating a BOM: "Assembled Product" isn't turned on in its Details tab.
  • A part can't be added as a component: "Component Product" isn't turned on, or you are adding the product to its own BOM, which isn't allowed.
  • Changes to a BOM didn't reach an open Assembly: BOM changes only apply to Assemblies and Disassemblies created after the change.
  • The BOM Total Cost didn't refresh after component costs were corrected: remove the components and add them again to force a recalculation.
  • You can't delete a BOM: a BOM that has been used on an Assembly can't be deleted. Turn on Obsolete instead. A BOM with open Assemblies can't be made obsolete.
  • You can't turn off "Assembled Product": obsolete the product's BOM first.
  • Importing a BOM with a Never Diminishing component: with Xero, QuickBooks or Access Financials connected, you must give each Never Diminishing component an Expense Account. Use the numeric account code for Xero and the full account title for QuickBooks.

Where Unleashed leaves the work to you

  • Every component must exist as a product, with the right Type settings, before it can go on a BOM.
  • When a recipe, pack size or supplier part changes, someone has to update the BOM. Open Assemblies keep the old components.
  • The BOM's Total Cost doesn't update the assembled product's sell price. Someone has to review prices when component costs move.
  • With one BOM per product, builds that vary from job to job need an Assembly without a BOM or a generic BOM trimmed by hand on each Assembly.
  • The import template has to be prepared row by row, with product codes that match Unleashed exactly.

Where Logistify fits

Logistify doesn't create or edit bills of materials in Unleashed. Where it helps is the product data underneath: Product Catalog Cleanup turns supplier spreadsheets into clean SKUs, so component products are named and coded consistently before your team builds BOMs on them.
